This site is an initiative of Development Commissioner, Handicrafts, Ministry of Textiles, Govt. Of India with an objective to make a platform to showcase the rich cultural heritage and products of Indian Artisans. This site is an online catalogue of handicraft products under 32 different Categories.

The site main objective is for buyers of Indian Handicrafts to be able to view the different products made by Indian Artisans and get in touch directly with the Implementing Agency for procurement of the products.

A buyer has an option to search for products via 32 Crafts categories, or through a product Directory and also through States.

Currently the site is available in English and Tamil (for only Tamil Clusters) and soon it will be available in all languages for their respective clusters.

 

DEFINITION

Handicrafts are mostly defined as "Items made by hand, often with the use of simple tools, and are generally artistic and/or traditional in nature. They are also objects of utility and objects of decoration.

A cluster is defined as a geographic concentration (city/town/few adjacent villages and their adjoining areas) of units producing near similar products and facing common opportunities and threats. An artisan cluster is defined as geographically concentrated (mostly in villages/townships) household units producing handicraft/handloom products. In a typical cluster, such producers often belong to a traditional community, producing the long-established products for generations. Indeed, many artisan clusters are centuries old Artisan.
